Sustainable construction, aka green building, is the practice of creating structures that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout a building’s life cycle. A building’s life cycle includes site selection, design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
AI can be used to help with construction site selection. Imagine all the data that can be analyzed including traffic flows, future road construction, population changes, soil conditions, moisture levels, temperatures, sun angles and wind.
AI can be used to help with the building permitting process. Sometimes, the permitting process is the most inefficient process within the building project.
AI can assist with identifying preferred materials and equipment.
An interesting concept under study from the University of Massachusetts is smart facades. These smart facades use thermoelectric materials that can convert temperature differences into electricity. There are no moving parts, therefore, maintenance costs can be reduced.
