asthmaIdentifying and avoiding asthma triggers, breathing clean air, eating a healthy diet and exercise are some of the ways to help with asthma symptoms.

Asthma Triggers

For many, airborne allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander and smoke can trigger asthma symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. These allergens may be present at home or in the workplace.

Additionally, environmental events such as wildfires, floods and construction projects can lead to an increase in airborne allergens. Temperature and humidity levels can play a role as well.

Other triggers include emotional stress, physical stress and preservatives added to some foods.

Breathe Clean Air

Breathing air that has been cleansed from allergens can be helpful. One way to have cleaner air is by using a room air purifier. There are many designs from homeowner-grade to hospital-grade to choose from.

Some people have had success simply by changing their HVAC air filters from disposable paper to reusable electrostatic air filters. This method can be less expensive than room air purifiers. HVAC air filters made of materials with antimicrobial protection can be very beneficial.

Other Ways to Reduce Symptoms

According to WebMD, caffeinated drinks, a steamy shower, using spices and colorful fruits and vegetables in diets, meditation, physical exercise and breathing exercises can be helpful in reducing asthma symptoms.

Some spices, fruits and vegetables have anti-inflammatory compounds that can help ease symptoms.

There is a condition called exercise-induced asthma. Therefore, be careful exercising.

Asthma Rates by Location

Around 28 million people in the US have asthma according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Over 8% of the US population are impacted by asthma.
