Clean AC coils compared to dirty AC coils
Clean AC coils compared to dirty AC coils

Dirty air filters can negatively affect HVAC systems, including air conditioning, causing the systems to work harder and longer.

AC (Air Conditioning) is part of the overall HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system. Most parts of the country use both heat and air conditioning.  Whereas, colder regions may use a heater only, while warmer regions use air conditioning for cooling.

Effects of Dirty Air Filters on HVAC Systems

Dirty air filters lead to restricted air flow which causes HVAC systems to work inefficiently. This inefficiency can result in reduced cooling and heating capacity for the unit. Therefore the system must work harder and longer to condition the air.

The need to work harder and longer decreases the system’s lifespan and requires more energy to operate. Properly maintained air filters keep the HVAC unit running efficiently. Air filters should be cleaned or replaced regularly.

According to the Department of Energy, maintaining clean air filters can lower an air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%. One of the main functions of air filters is to keep dust and dirt off the system’s evaporator coils. This dirt insulates the coil which reduces its efficiency.

Effects of Dirty Air Filters on Indoor Air Quality

Clean HVAC air filters are not only good for the HVAC system, additionally they are also good for filtering the air that is breathed. Lack of air conditioning is one reason why some countries have more indoor air pollution than the US.

Clean air filters are a must for people who have asthma or allergies. Clean air provides a healthier place to live or work.

When to Clean or Replace Air Filters

In general, HVAC air filters should be cleaned or replaced every 1 to 3 months. Dirty and dusty environments require more frequent maintenance. HVAC systems that run more than normal may also require more frequent maintenance.

Washable electrostatic air filters are cleaned and put back in place. Whereas, disposable air filters are thrown away and replaced.

Dirty air filters negatively affect HVAC systems. Clean air filters help these systems run more efficiently, reduce energy use and make for healthier air to breathe.
